The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee decided to appoint Shubman Gill as the new ODI captain as the squad for the upcoming white-ball tour of Australia was announced. Rohit being removed from leadership left many fans shocked and wondering what the Mumbaikar had done wrong.

Though the chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained some of the reasons behind this decision, he also hinted that Rohit Sharma’s place in the future ODI team was now strong, which was the same case for Virat Kohli- who is also active only in the One-Day international format.

A report in the Times of India has claimed that dropping Rohit Sharma from captaincy was the outcome of intense discussions within the BCCI, the selection committee and the team management has led to this strategy for the 2027 World Cup.

The most expensive change is going to manage how Rohit Sharma will now work, as he had led India to a victorious Champions Trophy 2025 campaign earlier this year and kept a strong form in white-ball cricket. Since two years still remain for the 2027 World Cup, it would also be tough for Rohit- who is only active in ODI format- to get enough practice.
