Star Indian player and one of the brilliant openers Smriti Mandhana, is almost a step close to achieving a big milestone. She is just 12 runs away from surpassing the Australian legend Belinda Clark for the most runs in a calendar year in the Women’s ODI.
However, Smriti Mandhana will have the chance to achieve the milestone on October 9 as Team India will face South Africa in their next ICC Women’s World Cup match. In the tournament, Team India remains unbeaten. They defeated Sri Lanka and their arch-rivals in their first two games.
On the other hand, if we talk about their upcoming rivals South Africa, they made a strong comeback after a poor start to the tournament. They were bowled out for just 69 runs in a 10-wicket loss to England, but bounced back impressively with a commanding win over New Zealand.
Smriti Mandhana didn’t get a good start in the tournament. In the very first match, she left on only 8 against Sri Lanka. In the second game against their arch-rivals, she started her innings with great intent but couldn’t make it very long and was dismissed on 23. However, this year has been great for her. In 16 innings, she scored 959 runs at an average of 60 and her strike rate is more than 113. She also smashed some great knocks and hit four centuries and three fifties, with the highest score being 135.
In 1997, the great Australian batter Belinda Clark made history by smashing the first-ever double century in women’s one-day international cricket. She had an incredible run. She scored 970 runs in just 16 matches and 14 innings with an average of 80.83 and a strike rate of 98.11. In her great knocks, she also smashed three centuries and four half-centuries, with her highest score being 229 not out.
