Wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has opened up and shared his views on losing his place as an opener in the T20I format. Shubman Gill is the one who has been given this duty. Sanju was moved up in the batting order after Gautam Gambhir took the role of the head coach.

Ever since Sanju Samson got elevated in the order, he has been quite successful – as he has scored three centuries as an opener last year. However, he has now lost his position to Shubman Gill after Gill marked his return to the format in the Asia Cup 2025 while playing at the No. 5 spot.

Even though Shubman Gill being promoted in the order did not see him contribute much with the bat in the Asia Cup 2025, he is still kept as an opener for the (currently ongoing) five-match T20I series against Australia. Sanju Samson has now shared his thoughts on the change in batting position.

“To be honest, I have played a lot of different roles for a lot of different teams. I have been part of this team for a long time now and have done different roles. I have opened the batting. I have finished matches. Now, I am batting in the middle order. Only the openers are fixed in this team. The rest of the batters have to be ready to bat at any time and in any situation. We are well prepared for that,” Samson told broadcasters.

Speaking about the 1st T20I of the series against Australia, the match began as India was invited to bat first. However, the Men in Blue did not have much time to play as the game was constantly interrupted by rain. The game ended up in being abandoned with no result where the visitors player 9.4 overs of the game and posted a score of 97 runs.
