The BCCI is considering Shreyas Iyer as India’s next ODI captain, with reports suggesting he could lead the side until the 2027 World Cup.

According to Dainik Jagran, the decision comes even as Shubman Gill was tipped as a possible all-format leader after being named T20I vice-captain for the Asia Cup.

Iyer, 30, missed out on the Asia Cup T20 squad due to the 15-member cap but impressed in the Champions Trophy, scoring 243 runs in five games during India’s title-winning campaign. He already has 2,845 runs in 70 ODIs at 48.22, including five centuries.

His elevation depends on Rohit Sharma’s future. The 38-year-old ODI skipper, along with Virat Kohli, has retired from T20Is and Tests. Their ODI series against Australia in October could be their last international assignment. BCCI officials will meet after the Asia Cup to discuss the transition plan.

Shubman Gill, meanwhile, is unlikely to take on ODI captaincy despite his strong record, as the board wants to manage his workload. Gill already leads the Test side, is T20I vice-captain, and faces a packed calendar with series against West Indies, Australia, and South Africa coming up.

Selectors believe having one captain across formats is unrealistic given the current schedule, making Iyer the frontrunner for the ODI role.
