Indian cricketing great Rohit Sharma recently announced his retirement from Test cricket. He had previously bid his farewell from T20I format when India won 2024 T20 World Cup. However, he is still active in the One-Day format, but the selectors might remove him from ODI captaincy in order to avoid having three captains for three formats.

Rohit Sharma might get removed from Ode-Day captaincy:
Rohit Sharma will keep on playing in the One-Day format, and wishes to play till the 2027 ODI World Cup. Rohit will be 40 years old by the time of the tournament. On that note, Indian selectors will be aiming to appoint a young captain who can lead the team properly in ICC events.

BCCI expected Rohit Sharma to retire after Champions Trophy 2025:
While speaking to Hindustan Times, a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official stated that they expected Rohit Sharma to retire from ODI cricket after India won the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Rohit Sharma gave signs to stay in One-Day cricket:
After the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Rohit Sharma stated that he is going to continue playing the ODI format. During the inauguration ceremony of his stand at the Wankhede Stadium last month, Rohit also stated that he has retired from two formats, but is happy playing one.

Decision might get taken after England series:
Indian team does not have any One-Day match as of now, and they are going to tour Bangladesh in August for three-match ODIs. As of now, the national side is touring England for a five-match Test series, and BCCI might take a decision on new captain after this series.

Shubman Gill ight become the new ODI captain:
If looking at the long-term planning, Indian selectors might give the captaincy duty of the ODI team to Shubman Gill. Gill will show his captaincy skills for the first time in the longest format of the game in England.
