Mumbai Indians lost to Punjab Kings in the Qualifier 2 of the Indian Premier League 2025. This means the five-times champions are now out of the tournament and PBKS have their spot in the title-deciding clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, which will be held on June 3rd.
After the loss, MI skipper Hardik Pandya highlighted some key points which led to the team getting eliminated from the tournament. Firstly, he praised Shreyas Iyer for his spectacular outing and then pointed how Punjab Kings batter well, which really matters in such big games.
“The way Shreyas batted, took his chances and some of the shots he played were really outstanding. I think they definitely batted really well. I think it was par, but it needed some great execution as a bowling unit which I think in these big games it really matters,” Pandya said during the post-match presentation.
Hardik Pandya even spoke about Punjab Kings putting the five-time IPL champions under pressure with their batting attack. He also admitted that the team was not able to execute what they had planned, and just said some change in line and lengths would have been better.
“As I mentioned they were really calm, put us under pressure and I think we were not able to execute the way we wanted. I will not put it on the wicket. If we had to do something better it was maybe someone bowling right lengths or maybe the right bowler at the right point, the result could have been a bit different,” he added.
Hardik also pointed out how their star pacer Jasprit Bumrah would have brought out better results as he is an experienced bowler, and can do special things. However, that just could not happen today.
“In hindsight, it would have been different (whether he should have bowled Bumrah with 41 needed of 4 overs) and it would have been too early as well, Boom knowing the situation if even 18 balls are left Jassi can be Jassi and he can do something special and it just didn’t happen today,” he concluded.
As Mumbai Indians have lost the Qualifier 2, means they are now out of the tournament. Punjab Kings have won this match- meaning they have secured their place in the final. Royal Challengers Bengaluru is the team they will face. RCB had earlier secured their place in the final as they beat PBKS in the Qualifier 1 clash. The title deciding match will be held on June 3rd.
