For the first time in the history of T20I cricket, not one or two but three superovers took place during the thrilling clash between Neatherlands and Nepal in Glasgow on Monday.
The match ended up in a tie after 20 overs, forcing a superover, which in any case is rare in cricket. The super over ended in a tie as well, resulting in the extremely rare scenario of a second super over. Incredibly, for the first time ever in T20I history, the match progressed to a third super over, where the winner was finally determined.
Talking about the match, batting first, the Netherlands posted a total of 152/7 in a match which is a part of tri-series that also involved Scotland. Victory for the Netherlands was quite uncertain, but Nandan Yadav took the match into a super over
First Super over: Nepal came into bat in the first super over and scored 19 runs. Opener Kushan Bhurtel smashed two sixes and a boundary off Daniel Doram’s delivery, whereas Netherlands opener Max O’ Dowd, however repeated what Bhurtel did and slammed two sixes and a four to tie the game in the first super over, which took the match into the second over.
Second Super Over: In this round, the Netherlands took the crease first and scored 18 runs. Max O’Dowd hit another six, joined by captain Scott Edwards, who also cleared the boundary. However, Nepal managed to level the scores again as Nepal skipper Rohit Paudel hit a six, while Dipendra Singh Airee smashed a six and four and took the match to the third over.
Third Super over: Jack Lyon-Sheshat started the third super over, and Pudal and Rupesh Singh, who were playing their first match, and the Nepal team could not score any runs. The Netherlands team won the match by hitting a six over long on.
