Reports of India’s star batter Virat Kohli retiring from the Test format have been circulating on social media. On Saturday, TOI reported that Kohli has expressed his desire to step away from Test cricket.
The reports also stated that the BCCI wants Kohli to play in the upcoming five-match Test series against England, and he has yet to respond to the board’s request.
Speaking to NDTV, a BCCI source confirmed the news, stating that the board has asked Kohli to take some time before making a final decision on his retirement.
“He’s still incredibly fit and hungry. His presence in the dressing room lifts the entire team. We’ve requested him to take some time before making a final call.” said a senior BCCI official
Now, another TOI report claims that Kohli has asked the BCCI to reinstate him as Test captain. However, the board reportedly turned down his request, as they are looking to appoint a younger leader most likely Shubman Gill for the future.
“A new WTC cycle is starting. Future and continuity have to be kept in mind as far as the team is concerned. Even coach Gautam Gambhir would want a set of players he is likely to work with for an extended period. There can’t be any stop-gap solutions for such an important series. The last two series haven’t been ideal for the team and the England series is crucial,” the report said.
Though Kohli hasn’t addressed the situation publicly, fans and former cricketers have taken to social media in large numbers, expressing their support and hoping the modern-day great returns to the Test format. For now, Indian cricket watches and waits holding its breath.
