Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Arun Dhumal stated on May 8 that they are waiting on government directives before deciding on whether or not to continue with the league amid the military clash with Pakistan but Friday’s match between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) “is on as of now“.
The continuation of the tournament is has come under serious questioninf after Thursday’s match between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) in Dharamshala was called off midway because of air raid alerts in nearby cities of Jammu and Pathankot.
“We are reviewing the situation right now. It is an evolving situation. We haven’t received any directive from the government. Obviously the decision will be taken keeping all the logistics in mind,” Dhumal told PTI.
Asked about Friday’s game in Lucknow, he said: “Yes it is on as of now but obviously it is an evolving situation and any decision will be taken keeping the best interest of all stakeholders in mind.”
Following the abandonment in Dharamsala, players and support staff of both teams will be transported to Delhi via a special train from Pathankot, that is located about 85 km from the hill town.
The teams will be travelling to Pathankot by road. The one and only airport in Dharamsala’s, along with the ones in neighbouring Kangra and Chandigarh, are currently closed as part of precautionary measures to avoid any sort of potential Pakistani attacks.
India’s military is currently striking Pakistan bases since the early morning of May 7, naming the initiative as ‘OPERATION SINDOOR’ to attack terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and areas of Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir from where terrorists would plan and direct attacks against India. This initiative was taken by Indian government as a response to the Pahalgam terror attack.
On April 22, terrorists launched an attack on civilians in Pahalgam, a tourist place in Jammu and Kashmir. This was one of the most cruel attacks on terrorists since 26/11 attack in Mumbai in 2008. Before the Operation Sindoor was initiated, India had suspended the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan, and had closed the Attari-Wagah border while ordering Pakistan nationals to leave in 48 hours as well.
