Suryakumar Yadav, Indian captain, cleared the air on the unusual incidents that took place following his team’s exciting Asia Cup victory against Pakistan a day before.
The Asia Cup final between India and Pakistan was a thriller, with India winning by five wickets in the final over of the match. After Rinku Singh scored the winning runs for India, everyone assumed the Asia Cup was over, but the drama wasn’t over yet.
The incident began when India declined to accept the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi, who is the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), and the country’s interior minister.
Naqvi insisted that he would award the trophy to the winners. Although it was initially reported that Emirates Cricket Board vice-chairman Khalid Al Zarooni would present the trophy, Naqvi left with the Asia Cup, leaving the Indian team to celebrate their victory without the trophy.
Suryakumar Yadav, Indian captain, spoke out about the post-match presentation controversy, stating that his team did not keep anyone waiting.
“We didn’t close the door and sit inside the dressing room. We didn’t make anyone wait for the presentation ceremony. Trophy leke bhaag gaye woh (They ran away with the trophy). That’s what I saw. I don’t know, some people were making a video of us, but we were standing. We didn’t go inside,” Suryakumar Yadav told the Indian Express.
Suryakumar further stated that the squad was not pressured by the government or the BCCI to receive the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi. He emphasized that it was simply the Indian cricket team’s decision.
“First of all, let me make it clear, no one from the Government or the BCCI told us anything throughout the tournament that if someone gives a trophy, we won’t take it. We took that decision on our own on the ground. They (ACC officials) were standing there on the stage and we were standing below. I saw them talking on stage and I don’t know the details of their chat. Some in the crowd started booing. And then we saw someone who was their representative taking the trophy and running away,” he said.
Meanwhile, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated that the Indian cricket body will file a protest regarding Naqvi’s handling of the trophy.
