India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav has had a mixed Asia Cup 2025 so far in the UAE. While he is performing well in his role as T20I captain, his batting has been a concern. He has scored only 71 runs in five innings. His only notable performance was 47 not out against Pakistan in a group match. In the other games, he scored 7 not out (vs UAE), 0 (vs Pakistan in Super Four), 5 (vs Bangladesh), and 12 (vs Sri Lanka)
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has given some advice to Suryakumar Yadav. He suggested that the batter should take his time at the crease and not rush his innings.
“He’s undoubtedly a class player. All I would suggest is that he gives himself three or four deliveries in the middle to assess the conditions-check for pace, bounce, or turn. Watching from the dugout and stepping onto the field can feel very different,” Gavaskar told Sports Today.
“Sometimes, if a batter is ahead, it might seem like there’s nothing in the pitch, but it’s always better to take a few balls to gauge the conditions before playing your natural game,” Gavaskar added.
As a captain, Suryakumar Yadav is doing very well. Under his leadership, India have won all six of their matches in the tournament. The team will now face Pakistan in the Asia Cup final in Dubai on Sunday.
While Suryakumar Yadav has struggled with the bat, Indian opener Abhishek Sharma has been outstanding. He has scored 309 runs in six innings at an average of 51.50 and a strike rate of 204.63. The left-handed batter is in red-hot form, having made three consecutive fifties in the tournament.
On Friday, Abhishek Sharma became the first-ever batter to score 300 runs in a single edition of the T20 Asia Cup. He surpassed Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan, who has 281 runs and is now second on the list. Virat Kohli ranks third with 276 runs in a single Asia Cup edition.
