Veteran pacer Mohammed Shami being absent from the squad might have been one of the major reason why India lost 3-1 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year. The defeat led to a lot of speculations regarding his return to cricket following a long injury layoff. However, his comeback was far from his usual performances.

Mohammed Shami only played for India in the Champions Trophy 2025, and was then dropped from the tour of England for a five-match red-ball series. The 34-year-old is set to play in the Duleep Trophy, and has stated that he is fit enough to play in the Asia Cup as well. Let us tell you that Shami is not in the 15-member Indian squad for the tournament.

“If I can play the Duleep Trophy, then why won’t I be able to play T20 cricket? I don’t blame anyone for non-selection or complain about it. If I’m right for the team, select me; if I’m not, then I have no issues with it. Selectors have the responsibility to do what’s best for Team India. I have a belief in my abilities that if and when I’m granted an opportunity, I’ll give my best. I’m working hard,”” Shami is quoted as saying by News24 Sports.

Mohammed Shami played a major role in India’s outing to the final in 2023 World Cup- as he took 24 wickets in just 7 innings. However, he injured his ankle during the tournament. He then had to go through surgery and then faced issues with his knee- leading him to miss the entire 2024 international season. Shami then got called back to the national side, where he played 5 matches of the Champions Trophy 2025 and also claimed 9 wickets.
