The 30-year-old has now stitched together four consecutive fifty-plus scores in the tournament, following up earlier knocks of 121 (51 balls), 89 (46 balls), and 62 (37 balls). With 368 runs in just five innings at a staggering strike rate of 186.80, Samson currently sits second on the list of top run-scorers this season.
His rich vein of form comes at the perfect time, as the selectors and team management weigh up batting options ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup. With intense competition for the top-order slots, Samson’s consistency and power-hitting are once again pushing his name forward in the debate.
Gill vs Samson: The Battle for Opening Slot Heats Up
The race for India’s opening combination ahead of the Asia Cup is shaping into an exciting contest between Shubman Gill and Sanju Samson, with Abhishek Sharma almost certain to claim the other spot.
While Samson has impressed in recent T20Is at the top, Gill remains the frontrunner. The selectors have shown their faith in him by naming him vice-captain for the tournament, a clear indication of his importance in the setup. India will open their Asia Cup campaign on September 10 against the UAE in Dubai, before locking horns with arch-rivals Pakistan in a blockbuster clash on September 14 at the same venue. Suryakumar Yadav’s side will then wrap up the group stage with their final fixture against Oman on September 19 in Abu Dhabi.
