England’s star batter Joe Root moved one step closer to India’s legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar after scoring 34 runs in the one-off Test match against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.
Zimbabwe’s comeback to English soil after 22 years was spoiled by a dominant display from the hosts, who scored 498 runs for the loss of only three wickets by the end of Day 1 of the four-day match, with all three top-order batters notching up centuries.
Root was the only top order batsmen who wasn’t able to score a century after Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope scored 124, 140 and unbeaten 169 respectively. However, with his 44 ball 34 runs Joe Root reached his 13,000 runs. He became the first England batter to reach the milestone and fifth in Test history.
Reaching the 13,000-run milestone in just his 153rd Test, Joe Root broke South African legend Jacques Kallis’ record (159 matches) to become the fastest player to achieve the feat. In doing so, he also went past the likes of Rahul Dravid (160), Ricky Ponting (162), and Sachin Tendulkar (163).
Root is now just 2915 runs away from breaking Sachin’s record for the most-ever runs in Test cricket. He is currently at the fifth position with 13,006 runs and just 283 runs away from breaking Rahul Dravid’s Test record.
With the five-match Test series against India starting on June 20, Joe Root will be aiming to climb to second place on the list of all-time leading Test run-scorers, surpassing Ricky Ponting.
